In the heart of the enchanting rolling fields, lived a young shepherd. His existence was mostly pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his flock of ewes.

Their soft bleating and the rustling of the gales among the single tree on the hilltop were his main associates. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.

But, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous scheme.

Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the villagers.

One morning he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is read more a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but found no wolf.

The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
